Pet numbers in the UK 2000 - 2001

Pet populations have declined in the UK over the past year,
according to the Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association
(Animal Pharm, 12 April 2002). See box.
The petfood market dipped hardly at all during 2001, but
a trend is emerging as sales of dry foods increase while moist
food sales keep decreasing.
Sales of dog food were worth £778 million in 2001,
down by 2.5% from 2000; total value of cat food sales was
£678 million, down by 4.1% on the previous year.
The pet food trade is a valuable adjunct to the meat industry.
It allows an outlet for value-adding on lower-grade meat products.
