VEGA News 15: Insineration

Environmental watchdogs have closed — for a second time — a cattle incineration plant in Glasgow because it has been breaching pollution regulations

The incinerator, run by Sacone Environmnetal at Carntyne, reopened in December after being shut down for 3 months for breaching the terms of its licence. It is believed that a number of BSE-infected cows have been incinerated at the plant (Meat Trades Journal, 04 April 2002). Reopening will be allowed only after further changes to equipment.

Our Minds are Made up; don’t bother us with......!

Animal welfare is not a primary concern for mainstream consumers and plays no part in the purchasing decision for bacon, or other meats for that matter. Consumers put their faith—and their buying decision—in the hands of retailers. If a retailer has chosen to stock a product, the consumer concludes that it must be safe and have been “properly produced” (Meat Trades Journal, 26 April 2001).

The first thing to remember when talking to the kids about meat is don’t rabbit on about the different cuts and why they taste different because the kids will just lose interest. And don’t tell them that it comes from dead animals as there is nothing that upsets a kid more,” advises Trader, Talking Shop to butchers on Winning Over the Kids (Meat Trades Journal, 29 November 2001).
