VEGA NEWS No 16, June 2002

• Hospital Food Revamp - NHS fails vegetarians in its £40 million revamp of hospital menus. See our vegan alternative sticky toffee pudding recipe.
• Tracing, Tracing, Tracing - VEGA continues its investigations into cola, yeast extract, additives and mycotoxins.
• Freedom's Just Another Word - VEGA investigates RSPCA's Freedom Food label and discovers lax animal welfare standards and an anti-vegetarian stance.
• Pus in Pints - A century ago the British Medical Journal was criticising milk hygiene. Unfortunately today milk hygiene is still poor, but the BMJ no longer comments.
• Turbo Cows Engineered to Beat Post-FMD Crisis - After foot-and-mouth the national dairy herd is decimated. To combat the milk production short-fall farmers are feeding their cows high-protien diets to increase yields but this can cause serious welfare problems.
• Foot-and-mouth crisis - farming industry has much to answer for - Labour MP blames crisis on farmers' exploitation of sheep subsidy.
• Pet Numbers in UK Declining - The petfood trade is a valuable adjunct to the meat industry.
• Auction Ringing - Restrictions on animal movements mean video auctioning likely to increase.

• Off-Cola Food Technology - In 2000 experiments in the UK on animals to test the safety of food additives was nearly double the toll of those 10 years earlier done for cosmetics and toiletries. Animal testing for cosmetics is now banned in the UK - VEGA is calling for a campaign to end testing on animals for these unnecessary ingredients in food and drink.
• What sort of foods use additives? - There are question marks about the safety of some food additives, especially for children. Yet children's foods are the very products most laden with colorings and flavor boosters which cause concern on grounds of health and objectionable experimentation on animals.
• FSA Takes Action on on Colors in Sweets - The Food Standards Agency has found some sweets have over the legal limit of colorings and some have ingredients not declared on the label.
• Sweet Repose - the increasing demand for artificial sweeteners which are also tested on animals.
• National Smile Week 13-19 May - the British Dental Health Foundation warns that acidic fizzy drinks are causing serious dental erosion and making your smile disappear.
